Combining essential theory with demonstrations and hands-on learning, the course is designed to build confidence in recognising and describing common skin presentations and using basic dermatology equipment safely and effectively. Course Schedule Morning session: Dermoscopy and lesion recognition led by Consultant Dermatologist Dr Jaideep Bhat, the morning session introduces the foundations of dermoscopy and provides a structured approach to examining skin lesions. Topics include: Dermoscopy essentials - an introduction to basic equipment, technology and examination techniques. The language of skin lesions - how to identify and describe primary and secondary lesions using clear, consistent terminology. Skin cancer recognition - key features of common skin cancers and the benign conditions that can mimic them. Rashes and vascular lesions - a practical introduction to common rashes, vascular presentations and blanching lesions. Clinical image review - discussion of selected clinical photographs to reinforce pattern recognition and differential diagnosis. Delegates will receive a comprehensive illustrated course handbook containing reference lists, terminology and clinical images for use during and after the course. Afternoon session: Practical electrosurgery led by Consultant Podiatrist Martin Harvey, introduces commonly used electrosurgery devices and their clinical applications. The session will cover: The principles of electrodesiccation, cutting and coagulation. An introduction to commonly used devices, including Bovie units, the Surtron system and hyfrecators. Device controls, accessories and appropriate technique. Practical considerations for safe and effective use. Live demonstrations followed by supervised hands-on practice using simulation materials. Electrosurgery due to its non invasive nature is ideal for practices not requiring CQC registration. Course Sylabus Learning outcomes By the end of the course, delegates should be able to: Explain the basic principles of dermoscopy and operate standard equipment. Use appropriate terminology to describe primary and secondary skin lesions. Recognise key features of common skin cancers and selected benign mimics. Apply a systematic approach to assessing rashes, vascular lesions and blanching. Understand the basic principles and clinical uses of common electrosurgery devices. Distinguish between electrodesiccation, cutting and coagulation techniques. Use electrosurgical equipment more confidently within their professional role, local policies and level of competence. Course format The day combines: Expert-led teaching Clinical image-based learning Equipment demonstrations Supervised practical exercises A comprehensive illustrated course handbook Tutor Dr Jaideep Bhat Dr Jaideep Bhat completed his postgraduate training towards the MRCP(UK) across a number of centres before commencing specialist training in Dermatology in the West Midlands in 2001. He achieved his specialist accreditation in 2005 and has subsequently worked as a Consultant Dermatologist at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust for more than a decade, practising at both Good Hope and Solihull Hospitals. Dr Bhat has a particular interest and expertise in the diagnosis and management of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers. He is a core member of the Birmingham Skin Cancer Multidisciplinary Team, contributing to the assessment and management of patients with complex skin cancer presentations. Alongside his specialist interest in skin cancer, Dr Bhat manages a broad range of common and less common dermatological conditions, including acne, eczema, psoriasis, vitiligo, warts, skin tags, benign skin lesions, drug allergies, hyperhidrosis, generalised pruritus, skin infections and infestations, and hair loss (alopecia). His practice philosophy is centred on providing high-quality, accessible and patient-focused dermatological care, with an emphasis on achieving the best possible outcomes for every patient. Martin Harvey Martin Harvey is a Consultant Podiatrist and Fellow in Podiatric Medicine, with extensive experience in the diagnosis and management of foot and ankle conditions. He was awarded his degree in podiatric medicine from Sunderland University and holds postgraduate qualifications in independent prescribing and dermatological surgery, alongside specialist training in injection therapies, orthotics and minor foot surgery. Martin is the Director of Education for the Institute of Podiatrists and lectures postgraduate podiatrists in advanced clinical techniques. His particular interests include musculoskeletal conditions, foot and ankle pain, biomechanics, dermatology and injection therapies. Venue Lunch and refreshments are all provided.
